Abstract: Scientific research has been well acknowledged as an important knowledge resource for developing technologies. Studying science-technology linkages is crucial to help understand the mechanism of innovation. Using nano technology as a case study, this paper investigates what types of science-technology linkages can help improve the quality of technologies. This study uses backward and forward citation analysis, extracted from the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI). Our results show that a wide scope of scientific background has a positively significant effect on technology. Compared with unknown publications, highly cited publications are likely to lead to high-quality inventions. Moreover, variety of knowledge resources also presents positive contribution to the quality of citing patents, but only for patents developed by firms, not for university patents.
