Abstract: Knowledge dissemination by universities to the industry or within the academic community is a crucial element of today’s innovation development policies and is the focus of extensive study. The knowledge elements of different research efforts are generally disseminated through diverse output types and channels. This study explores the structural properties of a knowledge network and points out the possible influences on knowledge dissemination. It investigates in particular the interrelation of different types of research outputs: academic output, such as journal articles or conference papers and commercially relevant outcomes, such as patents and license agreements. Hereby this study combines university-industry indicators with academic indicators to propose a new basis for the understanding of university knowledge dissemination. Preliminary results show that the ratios of the different output types vary greatly over time. Given the usual separation of these indicators, the findings of the study supports a more holistic approach for university knowledge transfer measurements that takes more output types into consideration.
