“I know what’s out there, but I chose to come”——what are the driving forces behind Chinese trainees of the Japanese Technical Intern Training Program?

- An, Wang
- Note
- The thesis poses an insightful question, which extends prior research from the 1990s, which had focused on foreign workers primarily arriving from Southeast Asia, but under very different circumstances. The question of how the internet, and wider availability of information, and networks affects migration is an important one. That Chinese trainees seek Japan despite the knowledge of the risks of exploitation involved, poses indeed an important question. The literature and analysis presented here is a good starting point; however, the focus of the literature could have been more concretely focused on issues relevant to the specific focus of the thesis, and the analysis applied a more concrete methodology, even though the general insights are interesting.
