Abstract: This MA thesis focuses on the ambiguous nature of core modal verbs in legal English and Dutch. The research in this thesis is based on a corpus analysis of English and Dutch contracts. For the modal ambiguity found in the contracts a solution is proposed using deontic nouns. The thesis finally provides a number of propositions on how to avoid modal ambiguity in legal language.
