Kathakali: on interpreting aesthetics
- Author
- Hokke, Vera
- Note
- The introductory chapter briefly explains Kathakaḷi’s surrounding issues in today’s modern society. That being said, my personal objective is to enhance the possibility of understanding a Kathakaḷi performance, therefore this thesis presents a dualistic approach to the phenomenon: encompassing Kathakaḷi’s historical narratives and principles, and the aspect of semiotics. Chapter II describes the genesis of Kathakaḷi. Chapter III specifically deals with the philosophy behind enacted narratives and its predetermined cultural ethics. Chapter IV explains semiotics’ origin and chapter V justifies the methodology of my analysis. Chapter VI presents the semiotic analysis of Kathakaḷi’s static and dynamic features, based on my personal scene observation of the Naḷacharitam performance on YouTube. This semiotic analysis is constructed from the interpreter’s perspective and therefore takes on an etic approach, keeping in mind that my western mindset (as I am part of the target group) is incompatible with that of a specialist. Lastly, the results of the analysis will be concluded in chapter VII, and answer the research question accordingly.
