An exploration of the object placement issue of three categories of buyu-structures in Mandarin
- Author
- Cheng, Hang
- Note
- This thesis investigates the structures containing postverbal material in Mandarin and the restrictions on these concerning object placement, addressing the properties of three such constructions, expressing degree, result and potential modality. The author reviews earlier accounts, including valid and convincing critique of them and proposes modifications of those accounts. New is the perspective: to focus on the question why some of these structures are compatible with objects, while others are not. She investigates these issues in full awareness of the previous literature, including many (recent) works on these structures. The thesis also contains novel data and new ideas and makes connections between different issues for the first time.
