Abstract: This thesis explores the understudied work Latium (1671) by the German Jesuit Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680). Rather than focussing on the accuracy of its content, it provides insight in the reasons that motivated its coming into existence. By contextualizing this work in the antiquarian, Jesuit, scientific, political and religious traditions in the seventeenth century, this study addresses questions that are central to the field of classical reception studies.
