<title>Bardaisan's Book of the Laws of the Countries : a computer-assisted linguistic analysis</title>

<description>Bardaisan's Book of the Laws of the Countries : a computer-assisted linguistic analysis
Bakker, Dirk
This dissertation presents the results of a computer-assisted linguistic analysis of the ‘Book of the Laws of the Countries’, a religious prose text, attributed to the 3rd-century theologian Bardaisan, which is one of the earliest representatives of Syriac literature. Using the computational tools and methods that were developed in the Leiden project ‘Turgama: Computer-Assisted Analysis of the Peshitta and the Targum: Text, Language and Interpretation’ by dr. Wido van Peursen, I have analysed this corpus on different linguistic levels: orthography / morphology, phrase structure, and clause structure. This analysis enables us to gain deeper insight in the peculiarities of the Syriac language of the 3rd century; the same period in which the Hebrew Bible was translated into Syriac, resulting in the so-called Peshitta. As such, the Book of the Laws of the Countries represents a corpus written in ‘native’ Syriac, to which the translated Syriac of the Peshitta can be compared. This will allow us to attain a better view of the considerations which played a role in the creation process of the Syriac Bible; e.g., the amount to which translation was influenced by interpretation, the two possible meanings of the Syriac word ‘Turgama’.

<title>The old Greek of Isaiah : an analysis of its pluses and minuses</title>

<description>The old Greek of Isaiah : an analysis of its pluses and minuses
Vorm-Croughs, Mirjam van der
This study seeks to provide more insight into the Septuagint of Isaiah (LXX Isaiah) by analysing all the cases of pluses and minuses in that translation. In this way it sets out to contribute to and to complement the discussion of pluses and minuses in LXX Isaiah which was presented by Joseph Ziegler in his work Untersuchungen zur Septuaginta des Buches Isaias (1934). All LXX Isaiahâ&#128;&#153;s pluses and minuses have been collected and classified in this study, and then analysed to understand the motivation for them. Do they betray certain translation tendencies of the translator, or do they indicate that the Greek translator had a Vorlage in front of him which differed from the Masoretic text? One of the conclusions is that many pluses and minuses in the translation seem to be connected with certain literary, stylistic preferences of the translator. Hardly any previous investigations have been made into this stylistic or rhetorical aspect of the Greek translation of Isaiah.

<title>Believing in the Net. Implicit religion and the internet hype, 1994-2001</title>

<description>Believing in the Net. Implicit religion and the internet hype, 1994-2001
Pärna, Karen
Starting with Weber’s disenchantment thesis, a sociological tradition has developed that associates modernity with a crisis of meaning. The de-mystification of our worldview and the decreasing influence of religious traditions in specific are seen as obstacles for making sense of human existence. &#13;
&#13;
But in fact, modern societies are full of meaning and they continue to be religious. This study shows that, in an implicit form, religion can be found everywhere in our culture. &#13;
&#13;
The Internet hype of the 1990s was a particularly effervescent example of implicit religiosity. The hopeful discourse about the Internet that typified this hype drew on religious ideas and language, and it inspired strong belief. This dissertation explores the appeal of the Internet as an object of faith and it looks at how it could serve as a source of meaning.

<title>Why heaven kissed earth : the christology of Thomas Goodwin (1600-1680)</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/1887/14037</link>
<description>Why heaven kissed earth : the christology of Thomas Goodwin (1600-1680)
Jones, Mark
My dissertation, “Why Heaven Kissed Earth”, looks at the Christology of the Reformed theologian and English Puritan, Thomas Goodwin (1600-1680). The thesis attempts to answer a question first posed by St. Anselm of Cantebury, namely, Cur Deus Homo (“Why did God become man?). Goodwin answers that particular question by arguing that in the eternal counsels of God the three persons in the Trinity undertook to provide salvation for mankind. The Father arranged how this would be accomplished; the Son was chosen to assume a human nature and act as Mediator on behalf of the people the Father had chosen; and the Holy Spirit applied the work of the Father and of the Son to those whom the Son acted as Mediator. The focus of the dissertation is on the Son, which includes both his person (i.e. the God-man) and his work. There are few works on Christology in the English Puritan tradition and so this dissertation makes a unique contribution not only to understanding one of the most famous Puritans, but to the tradition in general. In addition, students of Christology are better able to place the various trajectories of Christological thought over the ages with this study on Thomas Goodwin.

Kagchelland, Arend; Kagchelland, Michiel
In this thesis the two authors discuss the confrontation between the supporters of the early Protestant Réveil in the Netherlands and several Dutch representatives of the Enlightenment during the period 1815-1826. This confrontation, which manifested itself mainly as a war of words, is analyzed on the basis of content and reception of the publications involved in the debate. Because the supporters of the Réveil wished to extinguish the optimistic belief in progress characteristic of the Enlightenment, their enlightened opponents called them dompers, a term related to the Dutch word for extinguishing a flame. Hence the title of this dissertation, Van dompers en verlichten (Snuffing out the Enlightenment?).

<title>Muslim opposition to logic and theology in the light of the works of Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911/1505)</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/1887/13226</link>
<description>Muslim opposition to logic and theology in the light of the works of Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911/1505)
Ali, Mufti
This study tries to answer the question of what we can learn from four works by the Egyptian polymath, Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911/1505) about the history of Islamic condemnation of logic and theology, in addition to the light shed on this subject by modern scholarship. Al-Suyuti's works used in this study are (1) al-Qawl al-Mushriq (QM) (2) Jahd al-Qariha, (3) Sawn al-Mantiq (SM), and (4) his Fatwa against logic. In these works, al-Suyuti invites us to take a fresh look at the much debated issues of the origins and status of theology and logic in Islam. As a staunch defender of the prophetic sunna, he discussed these issues at several stages of his intellectual development. The result was a rich documentation of the history of the opposition to theology and logic in Islam, which deserves to be taken into account fully by modern scholars studying these issues.&#13;
&#13;
In his four works, al-Suyuti endeavors to persuade his readers that logic was opposed by 68 prominent scholars. An analysis of the contents of these four works indicates that hostility to logic did become a predominant feature of Sunni traditionalism, especially during the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries. A prosopographical study of the opponents of logic mentioned by al-Suyuti shows that logic was condemned by distinguished Sunni scholars in Valencia, Fez, Aleppo, Iraq, and Mecca, and especially also in Egypt and Syria.&#13;
&#13;
Thus, the study of a newly-discovered QM manuscript and of al-Suyuti's fatwa confirms the veracity of al-Nashshar's reference, in 1947, to one of al-Suyuti's works discussed here, SM, explaining that al-Suyuti's SM constitutes the most complete encyclopaedia dealing with the (Islamic) criticism of Greek logic.

<title>Islamic reformism and Christianity : a critical reading of the works of Muhammad Rashid Rida and his associates (1898-1935)</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/1887/12958</link>
<description>Islamic reformism and Christianity : a critical reading of the works of Muhammad Rashid Rida and his associates (1898-1935)
Ryad, Umar
The present work is a critical study of the dynamics of Muslim understanding of Christianity during the late 19th and the early 20th century in the light of the polemical writings of the well-known Syro-Egyptian Muslim reformist Sheikh Muhammad Rashid Rida (1865-1935) and his associates. It is observable that neither Muslim nor Western scholars paid due attention to his views on Christianity. No full-scale study of his perspectives on that subject has been undertaken so far. Although there are scattered and brief remarks in some individual studies on some of his works on Christianity, investigation is still needed by focusing on his polemics and answers to the social, political and theological aspects of missionary movements among Muslims of his age. The base of our analysis in the present study encompasses Rida’s voluminous publications embodied in his magnum opus, the journal al-Manar (The Lighthouse). The core of these writings on the Christian beliefs and scriptures consisted of polemic and apologetic issues, which had already existed in the pre-modern Islamic classification of Christianity. However, al-Manar polemicists have added to their investigations many modern aspects largely influenced by Western critical studies of the Bible. There is no documented public debate (munazarah) between Rida and his contemporary missionaries. But al-Manar developed certain sorts of arguments drawn from critical studies about biblical texts, church history, political confrontations in the period of colonialism, and evidence of what it perceived as the wrong picture portrayed by missionaries (and some Christian Arabs) of Islam.
