Souleymane, A.A.

Groenewoud, M.
The objective of this socio-historical study is to contribute to a better and fuller insight in the development of Curaçao society in the twentieth century. The question that lies at the heart of this study was: What was the influence of the Catholic Church in the development of Curaçao society in the period in which this society was strongly in the process of industrialization and modernization and that subsequently made the transition to democracy, self-government and therewith to citizenship?
A considerable part of this study is based on literature and archival research, conducted in both Curaçao and the Netherlands, supplemented with the analysis of existing oral history material and the execution of targeted additional interviews. These additional interviews were conducted for greater knowledge and to illustrate, substantiate or clarify a specific situation.
The study focuses on the development of society and therein specifically on the position of the Catholic, predominantly Afro-Curaçaoan, population.

<title>Organizing Democracy: Reflections on the Rise of Political Organizations in the Nineteenth Century</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/1887/49587</link>
<description>Organizing Democracy: Reflections on the Rise of Political Organizations in the Nineteenth Century
Janse, M.J.; Velde, H. te
This book explores the new types of political organization that emerged in Western Europe and the United States during the nineteenth century, from popular meetings to single-issue organizations and political parties. The development of these has often been used to demonstrate a movement towards democratic representation or political institutionalization. This volume challenges the idea that the development of ‘democracy’ is a story of rise and progress at all. It is rather a story of continuous but never completely satisfying attempts of interpreting the rule of the people. Taking the perspective of nineteenth-century organizers as its point of departure, this study shows that contemporaries hardly distinguished between petitioning, meeting and association. The attraction of organizing was that it promised representation, accountability and popular participation. Only in the twentieth century did parties reliable partners for the state in averting revolution, managing the unpredictable effects of universal suffrage, and reforming society. This collection analyzes them in their earliest stage, as just one of several types of civil society organizations, that did not differ that much from each other. The promise of organization, and the experiments that resulted from it, deeply impacted modern politics.

Wolthekker, D.
In this book, research was conducted into the downfall of Gijs van Hall (1904-1977) as mayor of Amsterdam in the spring of 1967, when he was removed from office by the government. A unique political and historical event! But is also raised many questions afterwards about both the person Gijs van Hall and his life history, as well as the context in which he should have operated as mayor between 1957 and 1967.

The social democrat and war hero Van Hall believed that his removal had something to do with being a descendant of the distinguished 19th century family of public administrators Van Hall. He believed that he had become a symbol of the objectionable regent class and its paternalistic regent mentality, and the victim of opposition to this from a new generation. In his eyes, all the criticism he received was ‘only because I am a Van Hall’. This book tries to shed new light on Van Hall’s forced removal. It is concluded that his downfall was due to his lack of vision on the duties of a mayor, his difficulty to cope with a new media culture and the tragic loss of his brother Walraven during the war.
